When refrigerant absorbs heat, the condenser coil is the component responsible for releasing it. Condenser coils are usually aluminum or copper for efficient heat transfer and corrosion resistance. This is where refrigerant enters as a hot gas during a heating cycle to transfer heat into the surrounding air for distribution throughout the home, and the component releases indoor heat outside during cooling mode.
4. Evaporator Coil
If your home’s heating system uses a heat pump, it has an evaporator coil that works alongside the condenser coil. However, its function is the opposite. Refrigerant evaporates from liquid back to gas so it can cycle back into the compressor for more rounds of heating and cooling.
5. Expansion Valve
The expansion valve manages the flow rate of refrigerant by reducing its pressure before entering the evaporator coil. Refrigerant passing through an expansion valve undergoes a drastic pressure drop that significantly cools it. This process is necessary for refrigerant to effectively absorb heat while in the evaporator coil.
An expansion valve optimizes refrigerant for the efficient absorption and release of heat by controlling both the temperature and the pressure. A heat pump without this component wouldn’t have refrigerant cooling down enough to make an efficient heat exchange.
6. Fan and Blower
This component circulates air through the entire system. A fan in the outdoor unit draws air in over the condenser coil in cooling mode or the evaporator coil in heating mode.
The indoor blower is usually part of the air handler components that circulates air through internal ductwork. The blower moves air over the interior coil to distribute it as cool or warm air. Efficient blowers and fans maintain even temperature distribution and reduce energy consumption for smooth operation.
7. Thermostat and Control System
You control your heat pump through the thermostat user interface connected to the control system. Use it to set your desired temperature, activate energy-saving settings, and choose heating or cooling. Smart capabilities and programmable features let you make adjustments remotely or based on schedules.
The control system that includes the thermostat determines when the reversing valve, fan and compressor activate. This ensures that the heat pump responds appropriately to changing temperatures.
