Ductwork is the medium in which your HVAC system distributes conditioned air across your Little Rock, AR home. Unfortunately, like every other piece of equipment, they get old and can develop problems. Below are some of the signs that indicate you need new ductwork.
1. Noisy Operations
Although the HVAC system isn’t completely silent when operating, you may notice a strange, loud noise from the ducts. If you hear a continuous rattling sound or vibration from the ductwork, that is a sign of a problem. Sometimes it may have a lose connection at a joint and produce a whistling or rattling sound.
When your ductwork has such a problem, you not only lose energy, but you end up paying higher than normal utility bills. Contact your HVAC contractor for an inspection and replacement if necessary.
2. A Dusty Home
Cracks and holes in your ducts allow dust and pollen into your home and lower the indoor air quality. Such air pollutants are responsible for exacerbating asthma systems and other health problems. If there are cracks in your ductwork, it’s time for a repair or replacement.
3. Old Ductwork
Most ductwork lasts for about 10 to 15 years before they may start developing problems. If your home is more than 15 years old, have the ducts inspected and if needed, replaced to prevent drafts and ensure maximum comfort.
4. Tangled Ductwork
There are many causes of duct problems. For instance, a heavy object may fall and twist them. Such damage will restrict airflow and force your system to work harder than usual.
Damaged or kinked ducting will increase your heating and cooling bills. If you’re having problems with the airflow, check for damaged ductwork.
5. Reduced Comfort
Structural defects on your ducts may clog the system with dirt and debris, leading to loss of conditioned air. This reduces the efficiency of your system, and you’ll notice cold or hot spots. Although defects may get repaired, severely damaged ducts should be replaced.
