Why Is My Ductless Mini-Split Leaking?

Ductless mini-splits are becoming more popular in Maumelle, AR, because they allow for zoned heating and cooling. While they’re highly efficient and easy to operate, you might experience issues from time to time. Below are five reasons why your ductless mini-split might be leaking water or refrigerant and what you can check to troubleshoot before you call a pro.

See If Coils Need Cleaning

One issue is that you could have dirty evaporator and condenser coils and need to call an HVAC technician for maintenance. The evaporator coils absorb heat and humidity, and the condenser coils remove the heat and humidity from your home.

Check the Compressor

The compressor sits in the outdoor unit of your ductless mini-split. It increases the temperature of the refrigerant by compressing the refrigerant and turns it into a high-pressure gas. This then sends the gas out to the evaporator coil to release the heat and humidity. Refrigerant leaks in the compressor occur due to weathering, pests or damage from storms.

Inspect the Drain Line

One thing you should regularly check is your system’s drain line. When the drain line becomes clogged, the water backs up the line and can cause water damage to your system and your home. To prevent this, HVAC experts recommend pouring a vinegar solution down the drain once or twice a year to keep your drain line clear.

Look for Refrigerant Leaks

Don’t attempt to fix a refrigerant leak yourself, as this toxic gas can negatively impact your indoor air quality and health. If your mini-split doesn’t blow cool air or you notice bubbles on the conduit line, contact your local HVAC technician.

Maintain Recommended Temperatures

When it comes to your ductless mini-split, you may need to protect your unit from the elements. You should regularly check to make sure your outdoor unit doesn’t have shrubs or plants growing within 3 feet of is and doesn’t have any twigs or branches stuck in the casing.

If you believe you have a refrigerant leak or your system doesn’t seem to be working correctly, don’t attempt to fix it yourself. Instead, contact Freyaldenhoven Heating and Cooling today for your HVAC maintenance or repair needs.
